Each candidate was asked four questions about their connections to, and engagements within, the UNA. I provide the questions and candidates answers below. Rather than asking them about their political platform (we will hear a lot about that throughout the election) I asked them to reflect on the more personal aspects of their lives at UBC in the UNA community.

Describe how you are involved in the life of the UNA community.

Our family rents a community garden, our kids take classes in the community centre, and I also work on the beautiful UBC campus. Since we moved here, my husband Henry and I have spent lots of time volunteering for the community, including the UBC farm, community garden, school activities such as PAC, lunch program, cooking class, music theatre club, and walking school bus. We also participate in running a kids’ soccer team in our neighbourhood, with a volunteer dad who is a professional-level coach. The neighbours also enjoy the food together in the public BBQ area. We love our gorgeous community and friendly neighbours so much.

What brought you to live in the UNA community?

We moved from Regina, Saskatchewan to Vancouver for my new job in the UBC area about 4.5 years ago. It was tough because we considered Regina our second hometown, and we loved that small and peaceful city with many good friends and colleagues who still keep connections. However, I got a much better career opportunity of working at a national organization here. Fortunately, we met UNA, and were attracted by the nature, farm and multi-culture here. Now we have so many new friends who are also our neighbours!

Where in Canada, or the world, did you grow up? What about living in the UNA reminds you of your childhood home?

I grew up in Wuhan, China, a famous city since the pandemic. Please note we never eat bats :) I had never even heard about this dish before 2020 LOL. My childhood home was in a big community with many condos, a hospital, stores, farmers’ markets, daycare, school, library, cinema, swimming pool, fitness center, etc. Most residents there worked at the same company, knew their colleagues well, loved and took care of their neighbours all the time. Now you can imagine, compared to Regina's house experience, I immediately found a strong sense of belonging in the UNA community.

How would you describe your normal daily routine?

Before the pandemic, I walked the kids to the school or walked/biked to my office on campus. During the holidays or vacation days, our family would explore BC and camp with our cat everywhere. During the pandemic, I work from home and go to the office if needed. I play badminton or basketball with my kids after work or walk our cat in the forest to make up for the missing exercise. Of course, camping habits remain the same, even being introduced to our neighbours and friends:P Most of my evenings/weekends contributed to my volunteer jobs and lifelong learning. Sometimes they're concurrent:)
