Vote for Fei Liu - Get a better UNA Community! (campaign letter)

Dear UNA Neighbours,

My name is Fei Liu, a candidate for the 2021 UNA Board of Directors. Please accept my sincere gratitude when you open this message. Besides the 200-word statement published on the UNA website and newspaper, I would like to introduce myself here. Feel free to send your feedback or questions to my campaign email feiliubc@gmail.com.

My Unique Advantages:

* Major in Adult Education with Community Engagement and Leadership expertise

* Strategic Public Relations Certificate received from the University of Toronto

* Completed the BCIT Indigenous Awareness Training (with certificate)

* Knowing our community well through long-term volunteer work

* Multicultural background with education and work in both China and Canada

* Eight years of work experience with non-profit organizations in Canada

My Campaign Goals:

Multicultural & Multi-generational Community Engagement: Expand connections community-wide, empower new immigrants including international students, and underrepresented groups.

* Efficient communication channels - website, social media, and newsletters in different languages. Engaging multicultural groups to share and interact.

* More networking opportunities through recruiting volunteers in various events to connect newcomers or students with senior residents. – People can learn from each other and help each other!

* Include ALL and the internal stakeholders: Residents of all ages, local businesses, senior residence, schools, daycares, UBC campus, etc.

Security and Sustainability: Reinforce Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion; Combat climate change; Enhance community and road safety.

* A safe community should be inclusive without prejudice or hatred.

* Traffic safety will ensure sustainability – How can we encourage more biking without safe roads?

* Green initiatives to combat climate change – Time to TAKE ACTION!

Stakeholder Relationships: Maintain and establish partnerships with the Musqueam Indian Band, UBC, UEL, RCMP, VSB, YMCA, NRP, UHill Elementary and Secondary, BC Transit, government, etc.

* Reinforce the Win-Win Collaboration with UBC – Residents’ continuous benefit of UBC facilities; UNA-UBC joint efforts on safety, sustainability, land use planning, etc.

* Ensure regular communications with external stakeholders involved in our daily life – Set up specific committees to track and update.

* Renew the relationship with Indigenous peoples – encourage reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

Land-use Planning: Methodize communities with housing, local business, schools, and recreation.

* More available recreational facilities for residents – Prioritize the residents’ needs instead of the commercial rental and increase multipurpose fields for sports.

* Sustainable planning - Increase transit use, create a safer greenway network for walking and biking, and minimize the development impact on the surrounding green zone.

* Utilize the close partnership with UBC – Participate more in the UBC land-use planning progress.

From my perspective, this campaign process is a tremendous opportunity to connect and serve the community. I have been delighted to know two other candidates: Tony Cheng and Eagle Glassheim, who share my commitment to improved traffic safety and better communication amongst residents.  Many thanks to my neighbours, who have helped with the translations. You are welcome to join us and translate this announcement into your beautiful languages.

All the best,

Fei Liu
